![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My parents had theirs - and I don't know what they called it, or how they came to have it, but I think it was a male - long before I was born, when they lived in Thornby Cottage. ![]() They're not pets like cats and dogs are, they just sort-of adopt you, like the wombat in this story. So much of Diary of a Wombat rings true because of their stories - anyone who's had a "pet" wombat would no doubt agree (I'm sure the author has had one too at some stage). Pretty cool huh? I was very impressed by this, back in Grade 6, and I've never forgotten it.Īlso, and I was hoping to have more info on this for you, my parents once had a "pet" wombat. The dingo follows, and when it tries to jump on the wombat's back to crush the neck with its jaws, the wombat will lift itself on its powerful, earth-moving legs and crush the dingo between the hard plate of the wombat's back and the roof of the burrow. Wombats use it differently - when threatened by a dingo (the dog breed the Aborigines brought with them many thousands of years ago), the wombat will run for its burrow. Koalas use this for sleeping in the fork of branches high up in trees. When I was in Grade 6 I did an assignment on the hairy-nosed wombat, and learnt about their unique defence tactic: like koalas, wombats have a hard plate of bone on their lower back. Wombats are lazy animals - cousin to the koala, which is only awake for about 45 mins a day - and oh so adorable. This is one of my favourite picture books, ever since it first came out, and it's taken me seven years to finally get a copy - but the wait is worth it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Trigger Warnings: Violence/ Near-death Experiences/ Sex scenes Humankind is set to perish, and not even the horsemen can stop Death from fulfilling his final task. A hopeless task, made all the worse by the bad blood between her and Thanatos. When Lazarus crosses paths with the three other horsemen, an unthinkable situation leads to a terrible deal: seduce Death, save the world. ![]() And the longer she tries to stop him from his killing spree, the stronger the desire becomes. ![]() Nor can he ignore the unsettling desire he has for her. The one soul he cannot pry free from her flesh. She is the one soul Death doesn’t recognize. But Lazarus has her own extraordinary gift: she cannot be killed-not by humans, not by the elements, not by Death himself. The day Death comes to Lazarus Gaumond’s town and kills everyone in one fell swoop, the last thing he expects to see is a woman left alive and standing. And then, of course, there’s the one I’m all too familiar with. ![]() They came to earth, and they came to end us all. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. The mood is agreeably creepy but the plot grows increasingly silly in “Down a Dark Hall,” a supernatural thriller adapted from a 1974 novel by the late Lois Duncan, a recognized pioneer in the development of YA horror fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While Alfred Hitchcock's film based upon her novel proceeded to make her one of the best-known authors in the world, she enjoyed the life of a fairy princess in a mansion in Cornwall called Menabilly, which served as the model for Manderley in Rebecca.ĭaphne du Maurier was obsessed with the past. Her subsequent novels became bestsellers, earning her enormous wealth and fame. A prestigious publishing house accepted her first novel when she was in her early twenties, and its publication brought her not only fame but the attentions of a handsome soldier, Major (later Lieutenant-General Sir) Frederick Browning, who married her. She spent her youth sailing boats, travelling on the Continent with friends, and writing stories. Born into a family with a rich artistic and historical background, the daughter of a famous actor-manager, she was indulged as a child and grew up enjoying enormous freedom from financial and parental restraint. In many ways the life of Daphne du Maurier resembles that of a fairy tale. Few writers have created more magical and mysterious places than Jamaica Inn and Manderley, buildings invested with a rich character that gives them a memorable life of their own. If Daphne du Maurier had written only Rebecca, she would still be one of the great shapers of popular culture and the modern imagination. ![]() By Richard Kelly - Professor of English, University of Tennessee ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As he takes us through his ancestral culinary history, Twitty suggests that healing may come from embracing the discomfort of the South's past. He sifts through stories, recipes, genetic tests, and historical documents, and visits Civil War battlefields in Virginia, synagogues in Alabama, and black-owned organic farms in Georgia. Twitty travels from the tobacco and rice farms of colonial times to plantation kitchens and backbreaking cotton fields to tell of the struggles his family faced and how food enabled his ancestors' survival across three centuries. In this unique memoir, Twitty takes readers to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine. Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who "owns" it is one of the most provocative touchpoints in our ongoing struggles over race. Twitty brings a fresh perspective to our most divisive cultural issue, race, in this illuminating memoir of Southern cuisine and food culture that traces his ancestry-both black and white-through food, from Africa to America and from slavery to freedom. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, a good 100 pages are spent describing these differences in character of the brothers. The novel spans for four generations of the same family and two continents.
